He was a pediatrician and a researcher, but at heart he was interested in applying science to solving societal problems. Eliminating spinal meningitis was the biggest challenge for a pediatric researcher during his early career- many people today are not aware of Hib or what a devastating illness bacterial meningitis once was. David's greatest contribution (along with his collaborators) was in making this major childhood disease essentially unknown. Before the vaccine, 20,000 children each year were infected with Hib; 5% died of meningitis; 30% were impaired for life with acquired mental retardation, deafness or other neurological impacts as a result of the illness.

But David Hamilton Smith's story shows us that skill as a scientist is not enough for solving problems...

Making music is a labour of love, making money is a by-product.

In a perfect world we would give all our music away for free and survive on touring revenue, merchandising and licensing income. Alas this is not always possible. In order to eat we have to sell a few CD’s. The good news is that all tracks on this site have been released under this creative commons license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0 We have made many Antiqcool songs free to download for a reason, we want you to… Continue

You Gotz to Learn It on Cyber Streets

As you explore FilmNet’s vast reserves of films, you’ll notice: some people’s work stands out. Sure there are titles here produced by world class film schools with tons of resources, but there are just as many semi-professional short films made by modest means. You can tell they had the same type of equipment and the same amount of people at their disposal as you do on your productions, but their stuff is just so damn good…

It’s all about making your film excel equally in all aspects.

Madras Press: giving fiction the perfect fit

There are interesting unities between philanthropy and art-making, particularly when art is produced and presented in non-traditional ways. Both require out-of-the-box approach to commerce, an eschewing of financial norms. In Art and Philanthropy, we’ll look at those projects that merge artistic with philanthropic vision - creative, innovative, altruistic. Sumanth Prabhaker, publisher of the Brookline-based Madras Press, [...]

We contacted Mary Sherman about her thriving organization and its unique appeal to artists with global aspirations… The course: artists may not have the [...]
