Filmmaker? Genres you work in:
documentary, educational
About Me:
My name is Le. I was born in China and raised in Oakland, California. I graduated from film school at San Francisco State University and currently work in LA as a production assistant for INTERVENTION, an Emmy-nominated doc series and the highest-rated program in the history of A&E.

This is my latest video cut: a conference I attended for Students for Sensible Drug Policy in DC following the 2004 election...

Current filmmaking concerns:
The merge/divide between web content, TV, and theatrical. How doc makers will cover the Obama administration. Differences in American doc communities in SF, LA, NYC, New England, etc. Considering moving back to SF.
About my films:
I've done a lot of stuff on drug policy because I spent a lot of my college yrs volunteering on these issues. I am also interested in exploring real-life stories that question gender roles (along with social/racial bigotry) as well as showcase successful, talented Asian-Americans.

The effort to bring more creative leaders of my ethnicity to the light of mainstream audiences won't be complete w/o acknowledging all of us out here working in the nonfiction field such as Jessica Yu, Benson Lee, Ruby Yang, and many others! This is also a part of my goal in showcasing traditionally marginalized populations in major US news media.
Books I'm reading:
1984 by George Orwell, Drug Crazy by Mike Gray, Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, A-Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Harold Schechter, and anything by Edgar Allan Poe, also some Michael Crichton (RIP).
Films I love (or can't wait to see):
Bowling for Columbine; Children Underground; The Devil and Daniel Johnston; Scratch; Better Living Through Circuitry; History Channel: Hooked, Illegal Drugs and How They Got That Way; ABC News Peter Jennings: Ecstasy Rising; ABC News John Stossell: The War on Drugs, A War on Americans?; and too many more to name!! I watch so many docs!!!
Television --the papers say its the golden age- you agree (or you don't!) because you watch.....
Intervention, Mondays 9pm on A&E

Hey, Le. Am just sending out invites for our fundraising party in LA this Aug. 14, and remembered you live there. Maybe we'll meet over a martini toast? If you wouldn't mind, could you send our invite around to your LA contacts who might be interested? http://www.seekinghappilyeverafter.eventbrite.com/ How's all in your parts? What are you working on these days? Michelle

You have gotten me thinking about something. In my current project, a film instructing a parent how to protect their child from sexual abuse, I will be using some children's images. Should I cast pretty little girls? Wouldn't most people?

It's so sad how all of society treats girls who aren't the prettiest. But they get sexually abused, too, in reality.

Also, when I have cast for extras before, even for a crowd scene, I was deluged by emails from mothers pushing their children at me. They sent pictures of the girls in scanty clothes, sexy poses. All cute, all white and mostly blonde. It was so sad.

They didn't know but what I was a man, a pervert, a child trafficker, a pedophile pornographer, because they hadn't even met me.

The Britney's Moms of the world know what sells and they're selling it.

i looked at your blogger and myspace on this subject and i know you have a valid point. i wonder if your subject might be better served as a narrative film dealing with the subject.

i guess i only say that because it seems like it would be difficult to highlight this injustice without going after the reasons why the media does this, which is that they are giving the people what they want.

america is all about younger, prettier, whiter. and it's a misogynist culture. with, women being the worst enemy of women as well. you are smart to ask so many people what they think. it's a sticky wicket subject that needs a brilliant hook.
