Filmaka.com just posted their next contest! They're looking for
pitches for a web series about people and their cars. You submit a
detailed written synopsis of a film 3 to 5 minutes in length, with 4
or 5 more episode ideas intended to total around 30 minutes of
original webisodic content. Finalists receive $5000 each. General
Motors is sponsoring the contest and if they decide to produce final
pitches, they will fund the production. Filmaka.com will start
accepting submissions in the middle of next week and the contest
closes March 11. Details at: http://www.filmaka.com/gm/

Filmmaker? Genres you work in:
documentary, educational, broadcast, cable
About Me:
I love what I do - it doesn't feel like work most of the time. I wish there was more time in the day. I'm cautiously optimistic. I am addicted to travel.

Current filmmaking concerns:
What will the long term impact of reality TV and online distribution be on documentary? Also, how do we market documentaries with commercial appeal AND artistic value without betraying the project's integrity? And finally, promotional trailers (sigh) – an inherently problematic necessary evil or a way to gain sharper focus? I’m still deciding.
About my films:
Speaking in Code: First feature length documentary project. Production complete. Post production in progress. Character-driven, intimate, quirky, funny, and very real. Follows a handful of characters in underground electronic music (a robot builder who loves to dance and make techno, east german vodka guzzling communist DJs, bad boy techno producers who love their mothers, a techno evangelist, international jet set journalist, the melancholoy romantic DJ...). It's a techno film that's not really about techno - its about people as they survive and thrive in the digital age. Shot in 5 countries, 11 cities. Transitions and credit roll backgrounds will be urban scenes and textures as moving photographs.

Art films: Short experimental photo animations accompanied by layered field recordings. Themes include travel, escapism, urban decay, beauty, self reflection, and the tension and pull between being in urban and suburban and rural places.

Projects for work: Hip, very real and relaxed documentary style 'propaganda' for the Emerson Admission Office. No narration, minimal graphics, intimate interviews and follow shoots capturing the student experience.
Books I'm reading:
I was trying to read White Teeth. I don't think its working out. I was also trying to read One Bullet Away and that's definitely not working out.
Films I love (or can't wait to see):
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, Spellbound, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jesus Camp, The Fog of War, Startup.com, Control Room, Grey Gardens, Waco: The Rules of Engagement, High School, War Room, Primary...many many more docs. Also: Cleo from 5 to 7, Network, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, The Ice Storm.
Television --the papers say its the golden age- you agree (or you don't!) because you watch.....
Big Love, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Project Runway (guilty pleasure), Entourage.
