City:
Woods Hole,
Filmmaker? Genres you work in:
documentary, narrative, animation, corporate, broadcast, vlogger
About Me:
I am what the Boston Globe called "a digital renaissance man". But for matters of discussion let's just say I am a media artist. I work in many media. Sometimes simultaneously. I bought my first Macintosh computer in 1984 to write my graduate thesis at M.I.T. called "Towards Large-scale Environmental Performance." The basic idea behind the work was to build sculpture both gigantic in form and environmentally "interactive". For the next twenty years or so, I designed, built and recorded my inflatable sculptures, some that were electronically interactive combining computers, sound, and site-specific design. My undergraduate degree was in the theater, concentrating on Directing and Design and I have always approached my work with an eye towards the dramatic. Together with my wife and partner, Nicole, we formed a company which provided my artworks to museums, entertainment and event markets, throughout the US, Japan and Korea.

After licensing my design work in 2002, my wife and two children traveled 70,000miles around the globe in search of inspiration and re-invention. For us it was a way, post 911, to demonstrate to our children that the world was not as scary a place as was being depicted.

As a media artist, I have always honed my visual skills by painting, having studied both at the Pennsylvania Academy of FIne Arts in the early eighties, and later with David Addison Small at the Boston Center for the Arts, where I was a resident artist. With Small, I learned the "misch" technique which combines egg tempera with oil, the renaissance technique used by Botticelli, and Breughel the Elder. I have painted with this technique since the late eighties.

I also have used the modern systems from all ranges of still and moving image, from photography to computer-aided digital image making and animation.

I currently live and work in Woods Hole,Mass. on Cape Cod where I help program the Woods Hole Film Festival and produce films.

Current filmmaking concerns:
My most recent work is in documentary short form producing and directing which combines a lot of the talents into one area. WILMA'S WARNING which I produced for the fledging Al Jazeera English's "People and Power" show chronicles an environmental chemist in her fight in post Katrina Louisiana, for environmental justice. While I grew up in Philadelphia and Cape Cod, my maternal family has deep roots in Louisiana, and so I felt I would put energy towards helping this most creative of American cities.

My current projects are post production on a profile of a reclusive comedian, David Lasagna, and his attempt to use solo performance as a way to emerge from his hermit-like existence. I am also working on a film that profiles THE NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT, a series of art installations in and around New Orleans where a group of artists take over gutted houses just prior to their rebuilding as a way to re-establish a sense of community in a devastated area.
About my films:
I could say I just want to tell good stories. Which of course I do. But filmmaking for me is a way to combine so many of my skills into one form. Writing, image-making, design, music, drama. There is no other form that allows a process that embraces, includes and connects all media. It is never simply a story, it is the weaving of many layers which make a complex of media SEEM simple. I am partial to stories about passion, environmental justice, technology, science and the arts.

Filmaka.com just posted their next contest! They're looking for
pitches for a web series about people and their cars. You submit a
detailed written synopsis of a film 3 to 5 minutes in length, with 4
or 5 more episode ideas intended to total around 30 minutes of
original webisodic content. Finalists receive $5000 each. General
Motors is sponsoring the contest and if they decide to produce final
pitches, they will fund the production. Filmaka.com will start
accepting submissions in the middle of next week and the contest
