Just read that Melanie's film, "Have You Seen Andy?" won the award in the Investigative Journalism category. Fantastic! I saw the rough cut at Filmmakers Workshop a few years ago and really liked it. A terrific personal doc.

Dear Filmmaker Friends,
I urge you to call your local Congressional Representative and John
Kerry & Ted Kennedy's office (Ted is probably out of commission,
though, but maybe a high level staff person will be responsive), to
urge them to put pressure on our State Dept. and on the Nigerian
Gov't. to immediately release documentary filmmaker, Andrew Berends and his translator, George
Samuels.
They are still falsely being charged with espionage and are
experiencing harsh conditions while b…

If you're around, hope you can go and support some of these wonderful films and also the theaters. There would be a big void in the Boston film going experience without them. There are links to the theaters and films on the Connect the Docs 'Doc Screenings and Events Around Town' page: http://www.connectthedocsboston.org. Happy 4th and happy movie-going! Continue

I just want to thank Susi Walsh and Sandra Schulberg for the amazing two night workshop on global non profit and for profit film financing for indie filmmakers. The workshop was packed with information and really expanded my thinking about financing indie films. Thank you Susi and those who helped you for making this affordable workshop happen (and also the wonderful food!) and thank you Sandra for being so generous with your information and thinking so creatively and out of the box. It's intere…

Dear Filmmaker Friends,
Just to let you know this Sunday, May 11th, is our last meeting before our annual dinner out in June and then we break for the summer.
It is my pleasure to screen member, Sieh (C-ya) Samurah's 80 minute rough cut of SWEET SALONE about the music scene in Sierra Leone, http://www.sweetsalonefilm.info/.
I'm really excited to see his rough cut. C-ya fought in combat in the Iraqi war and is a new Connect the Docs member. It's great that we can offer him our feedback and…

Saw Jessica Yu's first narrative feature, "PING PONG PLAYA." I hadn't read the festival's description carefully, so I thought I was going to see a drama. (The description said something about a basketball player making the switch to playing ping pong as a result of an injury.) Much to my surprise, it is a smart, funny , well-made comedy, which is a shock after seeing Yu's doc, "Protagonist" at IFF, Boston 2007. This delightful film is about a Chinese American slacker who, when his mother is m…

More packed screening houses last night. Saw the doc shorts and surprisingly, without exception, they were all excellent. "La Corona," Amanda Micheli's Oscar nominated film about a beauty pageant in a woman's maximum security prison in Colombia, is remarkable. "If a Body Meets a Body" is a fascinating look at the daily routine of workers from the Los Angeles Coroner's office who pick up and process dead bodies and how the workers handle being relentlessly faced with death. Film is both visual…

Audiences packed the theater last night at "Second Skin," which is screening again tonight. Film started off a bit shaky,, but if you stick with it, it's definitely worthwhile seeing. Interesting and varied stories of people who play MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) such as Second Life and World of Warcraft. The numbers of people who play these video games are in the staggering tens, even hundreds of millions.
There was also a sold-out screening of the narrative featu…

IFF, Boston is screening some incredible docs this year. (http://www.iffboston.org) "Wild Blue Yonder", Celia Maysles controversial personaldoc about her father, David ,is at the top of my list, since I filmed with Albert Maysles on and off for two years in Sing Sing. Talented doc film director, Steve James has a new prison doc, "At the Death House Door," which looks great as does the Oscar-nominated short "La Corona" by Amanda Micheli. There seems to be several docs about a poignantly quirky si…
